I think it should work on a pentium-pro at the earliest, although I personally have no way of testing that (I used to have that chip on a bare motherboard once, but I think I must have junked that years ago now)

I have a server running on a Pentium II with the i686 branch though..

Nice.  I guess saying Pentium-II or better for the CPU is validated then.

But this "only" applies for the i686 branch, right? i486 should run on earlier (even pre-Pentium) cpus?

Yes, I admit I was only considering the i686 branch above, for historical reasons.  The i486 branch should enable us to use truly crusty machines.
