I3-gaps won't start

I installed i3-gaps, i3blocks, i3lock and i3status through the i3 package. My .xinitrc is:

setxkbmap -layout de
exec i3

When I then enter startx i3 won't start and I get the following error message:

Re: I3-gaps won't start

What are the error messages in your /home/xxx/.local/share/xorg/Xorg.0.log? (lines with (EE)).
Does it work with another window manager?

Re: I3-gaps won't start

Awesome WM works, so it's something i3 specific.

Re: I3-gaps won't start

Just tried, I had no problems to start i3. Though I didn't update due to xorgproto-issues in the pentium4 branch
(stable pushed comletely unusable versions of packages):

shell> pacman -Syyu
error: failed to commit transaction (conflicting files)
libxp: /usr/include/X11/extensions/Print.h exists in filesystem (owned by xorgproto)
libxp: /usr/include/X11/extensions/Printstr.h exists in filesystem (owned by xorgproto)
Errors occurred, no packages were upgraded.

Can you please post your Xorg.log? Otherwise I cannot really see what goes wrongly..

Do you mean the file that I took the error messages from?

I wonder if that's related to this?

I hit a couple of the issues listed in that link on my x64 box, but haven't hit it yet on my x86 laptop, depsite running the testing repos.

Architecture: pentium4, Testing repos: Yes, Hardware: EeePC 901+2GB RAM+OS half on the SD card.

Re: I3-gaps won't start

@levi: I also think it has to do with the constant rearangement of X-packages. :-)
Though, the suggestion given for upstream doesn't apply for use, I had to use some --overwrite='*' during update
of stable/pentium4, stable/i686 seemed to update normally.

About the i3 think I cannot tell anything unless I get an Xorg.log..

Re: I3-gaps won't start

Good things take time, no worries. :-)

parse_vt_settings: Cannot open /dev/tty0 (Permission denied)

Check with 'id <username> if your user is in group 'video', otherwise add your user to the 'video' entry in '/etc/group'.

Note: starting X with 'startx' as normal user may not work at all. Usually you have to use a display manager and make use
systemd login stuff. Also not all display managers may work with this new way of X session management.

My user is in the wheel group. Can it be in two groups at once? I would like to launch X  from the tty, since I don't really want to install a display manager.

Re: I3-gaps won't start

FWIW, my /dev/tty0 has perms 0620, is owned by root and in group tty.  I'm not starting x as root and apparently there's nobody at all in my tty group, but it works for me into openbox at the moment.

Files can only be in one group fwiw, but users can be in almost as many as you want (I've never hit any limit anyway).

mmh. true. Don't know how I ended up with the idea of group video.
Is this a recent version of Archlinux32? There was once an issue with permissions and the Xorg wrapper script, but
this script has gone.

I just installed i3 with the i686 branch and I'm using a normal user with startx, I had no problems. But my video
driver is a SiS (Silicon motion).

Are you sure X is not already running in the background with a display manager? Check with Ctrl-Alt-F1 to
Ctrl-Alt-F8 all virtual consoles.

Re: I3-gaps won't start

Same for Intel graphics on a EEEPC 701 with pentium4 branch. i3 works with startx.

Re: I3-gaps won't start

Yes, my setup is on an EEEpc with intel graphics as well.  That's the main difference between his xorg.log and mine that I can see; mine begins similar but diverged as soon as it loads the intel graphics driver and then runs into libinput stuff and on.  His xorg.log looks like it recognises a Radeon card, and the last sub heading is about kms.  I recall there used to be a trick with recalcitrant machines that told the kernel not to kms during bootup but leaves X to do that for us.  I wonder if that kernel option is being applied here, or alternatively should be applied here if it's not already to try it out.

Edit: Also, his xorg.log reports he's using the kernel that was in stable at least the other day, and has the same build date for X as me.  I think it's basically indistinguishable from being freshly updated.
