Arch Linux 32 + Xfce + LXDM - keeps logging me out

First of all, hello to everyone here and BIG thanx for keeping 32-bit Arch Linux alive! smile

I made sucessful install of Arch Linux 32 with MATE DE on my EEE laptop few months ago, and I decided to try Xfce DE in QEMU so I could, if everything was ok, give it a try on my small laptop.

That's where problems begin. I've made same installation but with different DE using my script. All went well, no errors occured during installation. But, for some reason, after about 1-2 minutes after logging in, out of nowhere I get logged out. Next log-out is usually much sooner, after 30 seconds up to minute. I tried updating my current installation of Arch Linux on EEE and it works just fine. So, I suspect problem is in QEMU VM.. or not? Can anyone give me any idea what might be wrong?
I'm not QUITE sure, but I think same thing happened a month ago when I tried LXDE installation in QEMU, so I don't think it's Xfce's fault. Could be something with LXDM.. hmm

Thanx in advance!

Petar

Re: Arch Linux 32 + Xfce + LXDM - keeps logging me out

Are you sure it's logging you out?  As in, it's closing all open programs and dropping you back to the DM for logon?  Or it is instead locking the screen, requiring you to type in your password to continue but leaving all programs running in the background?  Neither should happen that frequently, but a full logout seems kind of drastic to me.

In terms of getting to grips with this, have you looked in the logs yet? 'journalctl -b' should get you messages since the last bootup (you may need to run it as root to see all of the messages) and 'dmesg' shows you the kernel messages.

Architecture: pentium4, Testing repos: Yes, Hardware: EeePC 901+2GB RAM+OS half on the SD card.

Re: Arch Linux 32 + Xfce + LXDM - keeps logging me out

Yes, it logs me out, doesn't just do screen lock. When I lock screen it gives me notification "logged in", but in this case it just logs me out closing all programs. I tried updating old LXDE instalation and it does the same after update. I tried 'dmesg' but did't find anything wrong with it. I might try 'journalctl -b' later when I get home.

Thanx for your reply! smile

Re: Arch Linux 32 + Xfce + LXDM - keeps logging me out

Do you have any errors in your Xorg.log (either /var/log/Xorg.0.log or /home/<user>/.local/share/xorg/Xorg.0.log?
I had a similar phaenomenon that Xorg was just logging me out for no apparent reason in a QEMU virtual image.
But it was much sooner, after one or two minutes maybe.

journalctl -b gives too big output, what am I looking for?
dmesg also gives too big output, and I just have no enough time to explore either since I get logged out pretty soon after logging in.
Is there anything I can grep from those commands that I can do from shell (I made it start as root from GRUB by adding init=/usr/bin/sh)?

P.S. As funny as it sounds, I think that moving mouse causes logging out. When I'm not touching the mouse, it works fine (did more than 5 minutes without logging out, and as soon as I keep moving mouse, problem occures in matter of seconds).

Re: Arch Linux 32 + Xfce + LXDM - keeps logging me out

In terms of dmesg and journalctl if you run them straight after the problem happens, the pertinent information will generally be at the end.  That tends to happen by default with dmesg provided you don't pipe them into anything, but with journalctl you'll need to scroll to the very bottom, or just press capital G once.  I'm not sure there's anything you can grep, because I just normally look at the end and see what it says.

So, cirrus is the standard VGA adapter for QEMU? I would try 'vga std' as it should provide Bochs DRM, maybe this is more stable.

Not quite, according to man:

cirrus
Cirrus Logic GD5446 Video card. All Windows versions starting from Windows 95 should recognize and use this graphic card. For optimal performances, use 16 bit color depth in the guest and the host OS.  (This card was the default before QEMU 2.2)

std
Standard VGA card with Bochs VBE extensions.  If your guest OS supports the VESA 2.0 VBE extensions (e.g. Windows XP) and if you want to use high resolution modes (>= 1280x1024x16) then you should use this option.  (This card is the default since QEMU 2.2)

I'll try putting -vga std switch to qemu and see if that makes any difference. wink Thanx for your suggestion! smile
