[Solved] Gnome won't start in remastered Install ISO

Hi,

I'm remastering the Install ISO in order to include Xorg and Gnome and be able to test Arch Linux around different machines. All worked fine when I only updated the packages and added the desired ones. But, I decided to make a... let's say... "deeper" remastering, in order to get a smaller ISO. Thus, I installed in the ISO only the minimal that I considered necessary to system works, but I think that is something missing.

I tried the "deep remastered" ISO in VirtualBox. It boots OK, all what I've tested in console/terminal worked fine, but when I do a "startx", X won't open.

  export GDK_BACKEND=x11
  exec gnome-session

It looks like a Gnome issue, 'cause I installed TWM and I have no problems to start it. Possibly is something missing, but I have no idea what.

--------------------------

Here is how I remastered the ISO:

1. First I've extracted it exactly as in said Wiki:

# mkdir /mnt/archiso
# mount -t iso9660 -o loop /path/to/archISO /mnt/archiso
# cp -a /mnt/archiso ~/customiso
# cd ~/customiso/arch/i686

2. Instead unsquash airootfs.sfs, I just created a new empty squashfs-root directory:

# mkdir squashfs-root

3. Then, I used 'pacstrap' command to make a brand new install and chrooted to squashfs-root directory:

# pacstrap squashfs-root base
# arch-chroot squashfs-root /bin/bash

4. Commented out 'CheckSpace' on /etc/pacman.conf file in order to be able to use pacman in chroot:

# vi /etc/pacman.conf
# cat /etc/pacman.conf | grep CheckSpace
  #CheckSpace

5. Configurated locale, in order to avoid errors and warnings in mkinicpio:

# vi /etc/locale.gen
# locale-gen
# cat > /etc/locale.conf << "EOF"
  > LANG=pt_BR.UTF-8
  > LANGUAGE=pt_BR:pt_PT:pt:en_US
  > LC_TIME=pt_BR.UTF-8
  > EOF

6. Made the necessary changes in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf:

# vi /etc/mkinitcpio.conf
# cat /etc/mkinitcpio.conf | grep HOOKS
  # HOOKS
  # This is the most important setting in this file. The HOOKS control the
  # order in which HOOKS are added. Run 'mkinitcpio -H <hook name>' for
  # HOOKS=(base)
  # HOOKS=(base udev autodetect block filesystems)
  # HOOKS=(base udev block filesystems)
  # HOOKS=(base udev block mdadm encrypt filesystems)
  # HOOKS=(base udev block lvm2 filesystems)
  HOOKS=(base udev memdisk archiso_shutdown archiso archiso_loop_mnt archiso_pxe_common archiso_pxe_nbd archiso_pxe_http archiso_pxe_nfs archiso_kms block filesystems keyboard)

7. Installed additional packages:

# pacman-key --init
# pacman-key --populate archlinux
# pacman -S \
  > nbd \
  > mkinitcpio-nfs-utils \
  > syslinux \
  > archiso \
  > sudo \
  > acpid \
  > intel-ucode \
  > amd-ucode \
  > alsa-utils \
  > networkmanager \
  > xorg-server \
  > xorg-xinit \
  > xorg-xinput \
  > xorg-setxkbmap \
  > xf86-video-ati \
  > xf86-video-amdgpu \
  > xf86-video-intel \
  > xf86-video-nouveau \
  > xf86-video-vmware \
  > xf86-video-fbdev \
  > xf86-video-vesa \
  > gnome-session \
  > gnome-backgrounds \
  > gnome-control-center \
  > gnome-tweaks \
  > gnome-terminal \
  > gnome-system-monitor \
  > nautilus \
  > gedit \
  > firefox \
  > flashplugin \
  > chromium \
  > pepper-flash

8. Made all necessary configurations:

# ln -sf /usr/share/zoneinfo/Brazil/East /etc/localtime
# hwclock --systohc
# cat > /etc/vconsole.conf << "EOF"
  > KEYMAP=br-abnt2
  > EOF
# cat > /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/00-keyboard.conf << "EOF"
  > Section "InputClass"
  > Identifier "system-keyboard"
  > MatchIsKeyboard "on"
  > Option "XkbLayout" "br"
  > EndSection
  > EOF
# cat > /etc/hostname << "EOF"
  > archlive
  > EOF
# cat << "EOF" >> /etc/hosts
  > 127.0.0.1 localhost
  > ::1              localhost
  > 127.0.1.1 archlive.localdomain archlive
  > EOF
# systemctl enable NetworkManager.service

9. Added a new user and made necessary changes in its .xinitrc:

# useradd -m user -G wheel
# visudo
# su - user -c 'cp /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc ~/.xinitrc'
# su - user -c 'vi ~/.xinitrc'

10. Created a list of installed packages, cleaned the pacman cache and exited from chroot:

# LANG=C pacman -Sl | awk '/\[installed\]$/ {print $1 "/" $2 "-" $3}' > /pkglist.txt
# pacman -Scc
# exit

11. Then I followed all the steps from the Wiki to generate the new ISO:

# mv squashfs-root/boot/vmlinuz-linux ~/customiso/arch/boot/i686/vmlinuz
# mv squashfs-root/boot/initramfs-linux.img ~/customiso/arch/boot/i686/archiso.img
# rm squashfs-root/boot/initramfs-linux-fallback.img
# mv squashfs-root/pkglist.txt ~/customiso/arch/pkglist.i686.txt
# rm airootfs.sfs
# mksquashfs squashfs-root airootfs.sfs
# sha512sum airootfs.sfs > airootfs.sha512
# cd ../..
# genisoimage -l -r -J -V "ARCH_201908" -b isolinux/isolinux.bin -no-emul-boot -boot-load-size 4 -boot-info-table -c isolinux/boot.cat -o ../arch-custom.iso ./

As I said before, the ISO boots normally in VirtualBox, but Gnome won't open. What did I wrong?

Re: [Solved] Gnome won't start in remastered Install ISO

Hmm, yes, if it can't open /dev/fb0 then that'll stop x in its tracks for most if not all configurations I'd expect.  Have you got one, an what are its permissions?  Mine for example:

$ ls -l /dev/fb0
crw-rw---- 1 root video 29, 0 Aug 8 15:28 /dev/fb0

If you have something different then I'm still not sure what would cause that, and what the best course of action is, but it's worth knowing I think.

Thus, I installed in the ISO only the minimal that I considered necessary to system works, but I think that is something missing.

I just found what was missing and solved the problem!

I am even embarrassed to say it, but the problem was that gnome-shell package was missing! I've made a mistake and installed gnome-session instead (I've confused the names).

To find out this, I decided to do a 'pacman -Q' in a working ISO and in my current ISO and then do a difference check. Thus I realized that gnome-shell wasn't installed.

Re: [Solved] Gnome won't start in remastered Install ISO

Good to hear you've got it working, and it makes sense that missing gnome-shell is kind of critical to a gnome 3 setup.  I reckon that's a singularly unhelpful error in the log though, having a working framebuffer shouldn't depend on what shell you're using, but thankfully you didn't have to rely on that to diagnose and fix your problem.

Re: [Solved] Gnome won't start in remastered Install ISO

Well, the ISO is not really a live system, also not in the upstream ISO (can you confirm that Gnome and friends
run in the 64-bit version of the ISO?).

The ISO is more for installation only, besides: who wants _NOT_ to put Archlinux permanently on his machine.. ;-)

Re: [Solved] Gnome won't start in remastered Install ISO

Yes, Gnome runs fine in both 64-bit and 32-bit versions of ISO. Even not being really a live system, the remastered ISO worked well as a live system. With it, I could quickly test how Archlinux and the WM/DM would behave in certain hardware specs before permanently installing the system on that machines. smile
