linux-zen
The latest updates broke the linux-zen kernel on my laptop. The main kernel still works fine.

Hmm, we applied the same changes as upstream did - which are also the same as for "linux" and the same, upstream did for "linux".
So either some additional divergence is needed for i686, it's something specific for your setup or something besides kernel configuration, that change ... I have no clue which of those.
