I have a small stack of these old VIA (Cyrix) C3 systems. They'll run Debian 11, but the Debian folks are getting militant about dropping 32-bit support, so I thought I would give Arch Linux 32 a try.
They're 686 architecture, but 32-bit. They do have CMOV, MMX, and SSE. I gave them 512 MB RAM and I am about to try giving the boot loader the "iommu=off" parameter to see if it will boot successfully. The previous attempt seemed to stall loading the initial image.
Any suggestions I should know about? Is this processor known to work (or not work) on Arch Linux 32?

Well, it tried to boot and got past the initramfs notice, but then had a kernel panic at 16.9s into the boot process.
Do I need to track down some i486 installation media? Or figure out how to build a custom boot image?

There is a i486 ISO, but this is one is old.
Easiest ist to use pacstrap with a custom pacman.conf with the Architecture set to i486, and installl it onto a CompactFlash
disk, then put that disk into the destination machine. The wiki here is full of examples.. :-)
